Dear Friend, America is the birthplace of flight. Ever since the Wright brothers' inaugural success, the United States has been a global leader in aviation. Our innovative aviation, defense and space industries touch every state and are essential to empowering a skilled workforce and driving the economy. As the Representative of the Air Capital of the World, I take great pride in my fellow Kansans' industry-leading work in the aerospace field. I am honored to announce the formation of the House Aerospace Caucus – a bipartisan group of members that understand the importance of U.S. aerospace excellence. As Chairman, I am dedicated to maintaining U.S. global aerospace leadership, highlighting the critical work that organizations and employees perform, engaging members and staff on challenges facing the industry, and addressing legislative issues impacting aerospace. Sincerely, Ron Estes
Headline: Chiefs Win! Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on their remarkable season and Super Bowl win! I know many Kansans were excited to root for our “hometown” team and see Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs become Super Bowl LVII champions. Go Chiefs!
Headline: The State of Our Union. Last week, President Biden addressed the nation during the State of the Union. It was an honor to invite retired U.S. Air Force Col. Kevin Rainey as my guest. Col. Rainey served in the United States Air Force for nearly 29 years, including at McConnell Air Force Base, and now trains pilots for the KC-46 as a simulator contractor. During the pandemic, Col. Rainey voluntarily received the COVID-19 vaccine but strongly disagreed with the Biden administration's vaccine mandate. As a result of the mandate, Col. Rainey witnessed service members or potential service members violate their own conscience, choose early retirement or simply not join the armed forces, negatively affecting the readiness of the armed forces. Good men and women, like Col. Rainey, have seen the unintended consequences of failed COVID-19 policies like the vaccine mandate, and while the policy has been rescinded, we still need to restore the service members whose mission was cut short by President Biden, and eliminate the mandate for other federal workers. I'm grateful for the service of Col. Rainey and appreciate him being in our nation's capital to highlight the need to restore normalcy in America. Our country has been under total Democrat control for the past two years, and the President’s speech was a deflection of accountability. While President Biden mentioned some of the crises across our country, he did not provide any solutions. Republicans have a plan to restore our nation – it’s our Commitment to America.
Headline: Our Economy and Debt. Two significant statists were released this week – the Consumer Price Index and the Congressional Budget Office’s Budget and Economic Outlook. On Tuesday we learned that inflation is still high at 6.4% since January 2022 – or more than 14% since Biden took office. This isn’t surprising to anyone who has to put gas in their tank or buy groceries. No amount of spin can cover up the fact that bad Democrat policies have cost Kansans hundreds of dollars each month. The CBO announced on Wednesday the national debt will hit $46,000,000,000,000 by 2033. Interest alone will cost taxpayers $1.4 trillion that year. Federal spending is 21% higher than projected since Biden took office just two years ago. This sobering report, along with rampant inflation, is why we must rein in the massive, unrestrained trillions of dollars in new spending that Democrats have pushed over the last two years.
Headline: Restoring Normalcy. We are officially three years past the first record of COVID-19 in the United States. Despite record-low COVID hospitalizations and President Biden declaring in September that the “pandemic is over,” we are still held hostage by extended COVID-19 procedures and a never-ending public health emergency that has strained state and federal budgets. I recently wrote an op-ed about my legislation that holds the Biden administration accountable for their flawed mandates and bad COVID-19 policies. You can read it in the Newsweek link below.
Headline: Passport Delays. As of Feb. 6, Passport Service’s processing time has increased due to a seasonal rise in demand. The expected processing time is 8 to 11 weeks for routine processing and 5 to 7 weeks for expedited processing. Please note, these times do not include mail delivery estimates. If you are planning international travel, please keep these increases in mind and plan ahead.
Headline: Ways and Means Hearings. Republicans' promise to the American people for the 118th Congress was to hold the government accountable and ensure that it works for the people. Last week, the House Ways and Means Committee held two hearings to uphold these commitments. Rather than hearing from DC insiders, Republicans wanted to amplify the voices of rural America. For our first hearing of the 118th Congress, Ways and Means traveled to Petersburg, West Virginia, to hear from local business owners burdened with rising prices and supply chain challenges.
I also share my fellow Kansans' concerns about wasteful government spending. Last Wednesday, Ways and Means investigated rampant unemployment fraud. These hearings are the beginning of Republicans fulfilling our commitment to America.
