WASHINGTON—Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) applauded an announcement today by Attorney General William Barr that Wichita has been named a National Public Safety Partnership (PSP) site. The partnership program provides enhanced federal support of state, local and tribal law enforcement officials and prosecutors as they combat violent crime. Wichita was among 10 sites announced today.
“I’m thankful for the Justice Department’s support for our local law enforcement in its mission to combat violent crime and keep our community safe,” said Rep. Estes. “This partnership will allow the Wichita Police Department to prevent and respond to crimes, as well as serve as a model for other communities in the future. I look forward to supporting efforts at the federal level to reduce crime in our region and throughout the country.” Following today’s announcement, the PSP will provide the Wichita Police Department expedited assistance in areas including crime analysis technology, gun violence, criminal justice, community engagement and investigations. According to the Justice Department, the PSP was created in June 2017, in response to an Executive Order signed by President Trump charging the agency with leading a national effort to combat violent crime. To be considered for selection, a site must have sustained levels of violence that far exceed the national average and demonstrate a commitment to reducing crime. Cities must also display compliance with federal immigration requirements. More information about PSP can be found at: www.nationalpublicsafetypartnership.org. Ron Estes is a 5th generation Kansan and represents Kansas’ 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means. |
