WASHINGTON—Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) voted against H. Res. 660 today, a resolution directing the U.S. House of Representatives to continue an impeachment investigation of President Donald Trump. Rep. Estes released the following statement:
"For nearly five weeks, House Democrats have conducted an unauthorized impeachment inquiry behind closed doors and without due process for Republican Members of Congress and the president. Today, the majority has put forward a resolution to retroactively condone these actions and continue the process, still under biased rules that ignore the Constitution and precedent. "Unlike previous impeachment proceedings, the impeachment inquiry of President Trump began without a vote on an approved bipartisan resolution or special counsel investigation, has not allowed the president's counsel to participate, and implemented different rules for minority Members regarding subpoenas and witnesses. "Although many have searched for a way to impeach President Trump since the day he was sworn-in, House Democrats have botched this process from the start. With just 16 legislative days left this year, Congress should focus on priorities like USMCA and funding our troops instead of a baseless impeachment. I voted against today's resolution because the American people deserve better." Following today's vote, Rep. Estes joined Minority Leader Kevin McCarty, Minority Whip Steve Scalise and other House Republicans opposed to the resolution for a press conference. Yesterday, Rep. Estes discussed the impeachment inquiry on C-SPAN's Washington Journal. Video to the remarks can be found here. Ron Estes is a 5th generation Kansan and represents Kansas’ 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means. |
