Rep. Estes Announces USDA Funding for Rural Small Businesses

WASHINGTON – Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) announced a U.S.Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant Program funding for the Sedgwick County Electric Coop and the Sumner-Cowley Electric Coop.

The Sedgwick County Electric Coop will receive a loan of $422,800 to create a revolving loan fund to provide small loans to local rural businesses. The first loan will help SPK Grocery Inc. and SPK Holdings LLC to purchase and make improvements to a grocery store in Cheney, Kansas.

Sumner-Cowley Electric Coop will receive a loan of $500,000 to create a revolving loan fund for small businesses and assist the city of Wellington with necessary improvements to the existing emergency department so that the facility can reopen.

“Small, rural businesses across the state have been disproportionately affected by our ongoing public health crisis,” said Rep. Estes. “I’m grateful that the Trump administration and the USDA are dedicated to ensuring that Kansas small businesses can keep their doors open and workers on the payroll.”

The USDA Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant Program provides funding for rural projects through local utility organizations to be distributed to local businesses that will create and retain employment in rural areas.

Ron Estes is a 5th generation Kansan and represents Kansas’ 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means.
