WASHINGTON – Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kansas) sent a letter today to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Richard Glick amid extreme increases in natural gas prices. Reps. Mann and LaTurner joined him on this letter.
"Exorbitant natural gas prices will undoubtedly shutter the finances of many Kansans already hurting from the negative effects of COVID-19 shutdowns, which is why I've called on FERC Chairman Richard Glick to quickly review the state of natural gas supplies and the rates of interstate transmission of natural gas, and take immediate steps needed to address this crisis, " said Rep. Estes. "Simply put, families, communities and small businesses are concerned about how they will pay their utility bills after the devastating temperatures our state faced last week, and I'm committed to working with FERC to find answers and provide relief for these Kansans." "Kansans did everything they could to keep themselves and their families safe during extreme weather and record-breaking low temperatures," said Rep. Mann. "We saw unprecedented demand for electricity and natural gas while supplies and delivery systems were challenged. This is why I am joining my Kansas colleagues in reaching out to FERC Chairman Richard Glick to quickly review the impacts of extreme winter weather on grid operations." "Thousands of Kansas families faced disruptions in their power and utilities as a result of record-breaking cold temperatures across the state," said Rep. LaTurner. "It is critical we ensure Kansans are not penalized economically in the form of exceedingly high utility bills due to the surge in energy demand. I am committed to working with the FERC to find a solution." Today's letter follows conversations with various energy providers and state and local leaders.
