WASHINGTON – Today, Reps. Ron Estes, Tracey Mann and Jake LaTurner introduced House Concurrent Resolution 63 that directs the House to formally arrange for the late Sen. Bob Dole to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda on Thursday, Dec. 9.
"As a war hero, statesman, leader and Kansan, it is without question that Sen. Bob Dole should receive one of our nation's greatest honors – to lie in state in the United States Capitol," said Rep. Estes. "For nearly four decades, Sen. Dole served the American people in the halls of Congress, first in the House and then in the Senate, and spent countless hours defending freedom and advancing liberty under the Capitol dome. I'm humbled to introduce this resolution and to recognize Sen. Dole's lifetime of service and accomplishment."
"From the battlefields of WWII to the halls of Congress, Senator Bob Dole always put state and country before himself during his 79 years of public service," said Rep. Mann. "He was a champion for our rural way of life in western Kansas, where he learned the patriotic values that fuel the pilot light of our country. Sen. Dole's legacy is an inspiration to all Americans, and that legacy lives on in all who believe that our brightest days are yet to come. It is an honor to join my Kansas colleagues on this resolution to recognize Sen. Dole's life with the honor of lying in state in our nation's Capitol."
"Senator Bob Dole spent his life serving our nation and truly embodied what it means to be a statesman. After being awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his selfless service in World War II, Senator Dole served in the House of Representatives for eight years before heading across the Capitol to represent all Kansans in the United States Senate for almost three decades," said Rep. LaTurner. "There are very few people as deserving as Senator Dole to lie in state under the Capitol Dome, where he spent so many years fighting for freedom and championing legislation that has impacted millions of Americans. I am honored to be a part of introducing this resolution to honor, remember and celebrate the life of a true American hero."
Sen. Bob Dole will be the 36th American to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol and joins fellow Kansan President Dwight D. Eisenhower in this honor.
