Today, Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kansas) voted in favor of major reforms to strengthen privacy in the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act.
"Global threats to our nation are more prevalent now than ever before, and the Biden administration’s open border exposes the United States to even greater risks. It's imperative that the United States has the necessary tools to combat terrorists and keep Americans safe," said Rep. Estes. "As we rapidly approach the expiration of existing FISA authorities in a matter of days, the most dangerous scenario would be to allow a lapse in our intelligence agencies being able to protect our citizens. The next worst case scenario would be a reauthorization of FISA authorities without any changes, given Americans' justified lack of trust in the FBI. While the bill is not perfect, the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act includes important reforms and prevents a dangerous expiration of authorities. The bill increases penalties for FBI agents who abuse the law, enhances oversight and accountability, provides means to vet those entering our country illegally, and is only a two-year extension instead of a five-year extension to allow for more reforms to be made in a shorter timeframe. Even though the FBI is unhappy with new requirements, these reforms are critical to prevent government abuse and protect our communities." |
