Congressman Estes Votes for $15 Billion Spending Cut

WASHINGTON—Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) supported H.R. 3, the Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act, yesterday in the House of Representatives. The spending cut bill, also known as a rescission package, addressed proposed cuts from President Trump totaling nearly $15 billion. This was the largest rescission package ever proposed since the process was enacted in 1974.

“As an engineer, businessman and former state treasurer, I have made cutting wasteful government spending a priority in Congress,” said Rep. Estes. “These spending cuts will save taxpayers $15 billion. While there is more to do, this is a great start to reigning in government spending which will build on our successful efforts to create a strong economy.”

Prior to the vote last night in the House, Rep. Estes spoke on the floor about  the importance of the spending cuts. Video of his remarks can be seen here.

Rep. Estes was among the first members of Congress to call on the administration to consider a rescission package earlier this year. Although not used since 2000, rescissions have been used by every other president prior to that starting in 1974. Congress has until June 22, 2018, to take action on the rescission proposal put forward by President Trump.

Ron Estes is a 5th generation Kansan and represents Kansas’ 4th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He serves on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and the House Committee on Homeland Security.
