WASHINGTON—Representative Ron Estes (R-Kansas) spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives today to honor the 60th anniversary of the Dockum Drug Store Sit-in which helped end segregation in Wichita. The sit-in began July 19, 1958 and ended August 11.
“On July 19, ten students walked into the Dockum Drug Store and sat down,” said Rep. Estes. “For three weeks, the students entered the drug store every day, boldly sitting through cursing, questioning, and even threats. Finally on August 11, the manager declared ‘Serve them – I’m losing too much money.’ Following their success, similar efforts became a hallmark of the Civil Rights movement. And today on this 60th anniversary, their actions continue to inspire.” Watch Rep. Estes’ full remarks here. Ron Estes is a 5th generation Kansan and represents Kansas’ 4th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He serves on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and the House Committee on Homeland Security. |
