WASHINGTON—Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) honored the commissioning of the USS Wichita on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives this week. The USS Wichita, the U.S. Navy’s newest Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship, will be commissioned in Mayport, Florida, on Saturday, Jan. 12. Rep. Estes will be among many elected officials and dignitaries attending Saturday’s ceremony.

“As the third USS Wichita in U.S. Naval history, this ship will carry on a proud legacy of representing Kansas’ largest city around the globe,” said Rep. Estes. “I’m thankful to the crew of the USS Wichita and the efforts of so many people in our community who have supported the work of the USS Wichita Commissioning Committee. Thanks in part to their efforts, I know the USS Wichita will serve our community and country with pride as the 'Keeper of the Seas'.”

The 387-foot-long ship can travel at speeds up to 40 knots and support near-shore or open-ocean missions.
